CHILDREN'S SPECIAL ABILITY IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

There is no doubt that adults learn better than children in all aspect.
However, this concept does not apply to language learning.
Do you know that young children learn both first and second language better than adults do?

A test was given to 46 native Chinese or Korean speakers who had immigrated to USA and learned English as a second language.
Those who arrived at the ages of 3 to 7 years had better grammar than the older people. (Elissa Newport, Jacqueline Johnson; 1989)

Why is that so?

As we grow up, our nervous system loses it's flexibility. The brain's organization is fixed and that makes language learning to be difficult.
Another than that, children's cognitive limitations make language easier to learn too. Children's brain reduce the complexity of what they must master and simplified language that they deal with.

The sensitive period

Therefore, this has suggested to many that there is a critical period, or sensitive period, for learning language.

EXPOSE YOUR CHILDREN TO LANGUAGE EARLY IN LIFE
if
YOU WANT THEM TO MASTER IT.
